How it works
To become an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) in the UK, you must pass three key tests set by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA):
1. ADI Part 1: Theory Test
Similar to the learner driver theory test, but more advanced.
Includes:
- Multiple-choice questions on road safety, driving laws, and instructional techniques.
- Hazard perception video clips to assess your ability to spot developing hazards.
2. ADI Part 2: Driving Ability Test
A practical driving test to demonstrate your advanced driving skills.
Covers:
- Expert control of the car.
- Driving techniques, including manoeuvres and eco-friendly driving.
- A high standard of awareness, anticipation, and safety.
3. ADI Part 3: Instructional Ability Test
A practical test to assess your ability to teach learners.
Requires:
- Planning and delivering effective lessons.
- Tailoring your instruction to the learner’s needs.
- Demonstrating clear communication and knowledge of driving standards.
Additional Requirements:
- Be at least 21 years old.
- Hold a full UK or EU driving licence for at least three years.
- Have no more than 6 penalty points on your licence.
Once you’ve passed all three parts, you’ll be officially added to the DVSA’s Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) register. Then you’ll be ready to teach!
